Blind from birth, Me­de­ma stu­died mu­sic at Mi­chi­gan State Un­i­ver­si­ty, Lans­ing, re­ceiv­ing his mas­ter’s de­gree there in 1969. He worked for a while as a mu­sic ther­a­pist, then found­ed Bri­er Patch Mu­sic in 1985.
