Arthur was the son of George Messiter and Marian S. Malim, and husband of Margaret S. Gaddis.
He emigrated to America in 1863, and sang in the choir at Trinity Church in New York City.
He later played the organ in Poultney, Vermont; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and at Trinity Church, New York City (1866), where he served 31 years.
