Nahum was the son of Cushing Mitchell and Janet Orr, and husband of Nabby Lazell.
He attended Harvard College (BA & MA), then studied law at Plymouth.
He served as a state representative (1803–05 & 1839–40), judge of the Court of Common Pleas (1811–21), state senator (1813–14), member of the Governor’s Council (1814–20), Massachusetts State Treasurer (1822–27) and in the U.S. House of Representatives.
