Charles was the son of William Moberly of Islington.
He entered Balliol College, Oxford, at age 16 (BA 1840, MA 1843).
He was ordained a deacon in 1846, and priest in 1848. He served as perpetual curate of Beeston, Yorkshire (1855–57); assistant master at Rugby School (1859–79); and rector of Coln Rogers, Gloucestershire (1879–83).
