Morell was educated at Homerton College, Cambridge, for the Congregational ministry.
Around 1800, he became pastor of a Congregational church at St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, where he stayed until 1821, when he was appointed divinity tutor at Wymondley Academy (subsequently moved to London, and later known as the Coward Academy). He kept this appointment the rest of his life.
