Like his grandfather and father, James Moulton, William was a Wesleyan minister.
In 1875, he became first headmaster of The Leys School in Cambridge, a position he held the rest of his life; one of the school’s houses is named after him.
He was elected president of the Methodist Conference at Bristol in 1890.
