Nee was the son of Ni Weng-hsiu and Lin He-Ping. He is remembered as a church leader, teacher and Christian author.
He came to Christ at age 17, and in 1922, organized meetings in Fuzhou that many consider the beginning of local Chinese churches.
After the Communists came to power, Nee was persecuted and imprisoned for his faith. He spent the last 20 years of his life in prison.
