Newman became a deacon in 1879, and a priest the next year. He served as assistant curate at Egloshayle (1879–83); St. Issey (1883–85); Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire (1885–88); St. Gluvias (1888–89); vicar of St. George’s, Truro (1889–1909); chaplain of the Royal Cornwall Infirmary in Truro (1889–1909); and licensed preacher in the diocese of Truro (1909–15).
He retired in Worcester.
