At age 17, Newton went to London, where he joined a Baptist church led by B. Wallin. In 1757, he became assistant minister to J. Tommas, pastor of the Baptist church in Pithay, Bristol, and in 1770, classical tutor at the Baptist college in Bristol. He held both positions until his death.
