Pseudonym: Co­lin Sterne (an ana­gram from his last and mid­dle names).

Biography

Originally plan­ning to be an en­gin­eer, Ni­chol switched his stu­dies to mu­sic, gra­du­at­ing from Ox­ford Uni­ver­si­ty (BM 1888).

He played the or­gan for the Hull Har­mo­nic So­ci­ety for 35 years, and the Kirk El­la church for 10.

He al­so served as de­pu­ty con­duc­tor for the Hull Har­mo­nic So­ci­ety, and mu­sic mas­ter at the Hull Gram­mar School, where he wrote the mu­sic for the school song. In ad­di­tion, he was on the com­mittee of the Hull Li­ter­ary So­ci­ety.

Most of his hymn tunes were writ­ten for Sun­day School an­ni­ver­sa­ries.
