Originally planning to be an engineer, Nichol switched his studies to music, graduating from Oxford University (BM 1888).
He played the organ for the Hull Harmonic Society for 35 years, and the Kirk Ella church for 10.
He also served as deputy conductor for the Hull Harmonic Society, and music master at the Hull Grammar School, where he wrote the music for the school song. In addition, he was on the committee of the Hull Literary Society.
Most of his hymn tunes were written for Sunday School anniversaries.
