Biography

Berndt was the son of lec­tur­er Berndt Ax­el Ny­berg & Ai­na So­fia To­pe­li­us. He mar­ried twice: to Ida Eli­sa­beth Lein­berg (1894–1905) and Es­ther Irene Lein­berg (1906).

He stu­died at the Hel­sin­ki Mu­sic Acad­emy (1889–93).

He played the or­gan at Ou­lu Ca­thed­ral (1894–96); taught sing­ing at Ou­lu’s Swed­ish Ly­ce­um and girls’ school; taught sing­ing and per­form­ance at the Rauma seminary (1896–98); and was a mu­sic lec­tur­er at the Sor­ta­va­la se­mi­na­ry (1898–1917).

He also edited the Kaikille ma­ga­zine of the Ev­an­ge­li­cal So­ci­e­ty of Sor­ta­va­la.
