Ruben was the son of Otto Emil Nygren and Sarah Naemi Erickson.
He was educated at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey; North Park College (now North Park University), Chicago, Illinois; and Union Theological Seminary, New York City.
After ordination, he served as a minister in what eventually became the Evangelical Covenant Church.
