Biography

Arne was the hus­band of Ma­ry Sloan.

Hiss fa­mi­ly moved to Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, in 1886.

He gra­du­ated from the Gott­schalk Lyr­ic School in Chi­ca­go in 1892, then stu­died mu­sic with Theo­dor Le­sche­tiz­ky in Vi­en­na, Aus­tria, and Jo­seph Rhein­berg­er in Mu­nich, Ger­ma­ny.

After re­turn­ing to Am­eri­ca, Old­berg be­gan com­pos­ing and teach­ing pi­ano. He joined the mu­sic fa­culty of North­west­ern Uni­ver­si­ty in 1897.

The next year he went to Ger­ma­ny to stu­dy com­po­si­tion with Jo­seph Rhein­berg­er at the Roy­al Aca­de­my of Art in Mu­nich.

He went on to serve at North­west­ern Uni­ver­si­ty as a pro­fess­or of pi­ano and com­po­si­tion (1901–41), di­rect­or of the Pi­ano De­part­ment (1919–41), and di­rect­or of the Gra­du­ate Mu­sic De­part­ment (1924–41).

Among his stu­dents were com­pos­ers How­ard Han­son and Ce­cil­ia Clare Bo­card.
