Hiss family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1886.
He graduated from the Gottschalk Lyric School in Chicago in 1892, then studied music with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna, Austria, and Joseph Rheinberger in Munich, Germany.
After returning to America, Oldberg began composing and teaching piano. He joined the music faculty of Northwestern University in 1897.
The next year he went to Germany to study composition with Joseph Rheinberger at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich.
He went on to serve at Northwestern University as a professor of piano and composition (1901–41), director of the Piano Department (1919–41), and director of the Graduate Music Department (1924–41).
Among his students were composers Howard Hanson and Cecilia Clare Bocard.
