Charles was the son of Henry Duncan Oliphant and Hannah Woodman, and husband of Sarah Curtis Jennings.
As a young man, he worked for a while as a newspaper reporter, high school teacher, and studied law.
He then attended Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut, and in 1876 was ordained to the Congregational ministry.
He served pastorates in New Jersey, Connecticut, and at the First Congregational church in Methuen, Massachusetts (1884 until retiring in 1917).
