Jimmy was the husband of Car­ol Ow­ens.

He was edu­cat­ed at Mill­saps Col­lege, Jack­son, Mis­sis­sip­pi.

Owens worked as a jazz mu­si­cian and ar­ran­ger, and as min­is­ter of mu­sic in three church­es in Ca­li­for­nia.
