Biography

Joseph was the son of Da­ni­el Par­ry and Eli­za­beth Ri­chards.

Hiss fa­mi­ly moved to Dan­ville, Penn­syl­van­ia, when he was 13 years old, though he oft­en re­turned to Wales.

He at­tend­ed the Roy­al Aca­de­my of Mu­sic (1868–71), was Pro­fess­or of Mu­sic at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Wales (1873–77), and re­ceived his doc­tor­ate of mu­sic from Cam­bridge (1878).

He taught at the Uni­ver­si­ty College of South Wales and Mon­mouth­shire (1888–1903).

His works in­clude op­eras, or­a­to­rios, can­ta­tas, pi­ano piec­es, and hymn tunes.
