Patten attended Colby University (AB 1890) and received his theology degree from Bangor Theological Seminary (1893).
He was ordained a Congregational minister in Everett, Massachusetts, February 1, 1894.
He pastored at the First Congregational Church in Everett (1895–97); First Congregational Church, South Hadley, Massachusetts (1897–1905); First Congregational Church, Santa Rosa, California (1905–09); Sacramento, California (1909–17); Forest Grove Congregational Church, Oregon (1917–19); Center Church, Torrington, Connecticut (1919–29); and the Madison Congregational Church, Connecticut (1929–34).
