Edward was the son of William Phelps and Mary Hunt, and husband of Harriet E. Goulding.
He was playing the organ at a Springfield church by age 16.
Around age 19, he began working for the Springfield Republican newspaper. He went on to work at the Evening Union and The Homestead, and eventually ran his own publishing company.
