Polman emigrated to Canada in 1955, and was educated at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa; the University of Minnesota (PhD 1981); and the Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto, Canada (post graduate work).
He was a long time professor at Redeemer College in Hamilton, Ontario, then at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he also chaired the music department.
He was organist and choirmaster at the Oakland United Methodist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota (1969–72) and St. John’s Anglican Church, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
He served on the Revision Committee for the Christian Reformed Church’s 1987 Psalter Hymnal.
