Emilie was the daughter of Halvor Poulsson, a Norwegian immigrant, and Ruth Anne Mitchell.
After going blind, probably in her teen years, she learned braille at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts.
She later taught and lectured in Boston, and was an advocate for early childhood education and the kindergarten movement.
