Daughter of a Methodist minister in Penn­syl­van­ia’s Wyoming Conference, Purvis graduated from Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in 1860. After marrying, she lived in Williamsport, where she was a member of the Mulberry Street Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church. She taught instrumental and vocal music at the Seminary there (1884–88), but was an invalid for the last several years of her life.
