Louisa was the daughter of David Lane Kendall and Louisa Rogers Steele, and wife of army officer James Henry Rogers, Sr.
She attended the Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia.
When husband died in 1875, she began teaching. In 1879, she took a position in the primary school at the private Gordon Institute.
