Introduction

Biography

Edward was the son of Ed­ward War­ren Root and Ma­ry Tall­madge Bun­yan, and hus­band of Geor­gi­ana Mer­rill (mar­ried Feb­ru­ary 21, 1893, New Ha­ven, Con­nec­ti­cut).

He was a gra­du­ate of the New York Class­ic­al In­sti­tute (1883),  a mem­ber of the Class of 1844 at Yale, and stu­died at the Yale Theo­lo­gic­al Se­min­ary, 1846–49. He re­ceived an MA de­gree from Yale in 1847, was a tu­tor there, 1848–50, was elect­ed to Phi Beta Kap­pa, and took one-year hon­ors in phi­lo­so­phy.
