Biography

John was the son of John Roth­en­stein­er and Ma­ry Mag­da­line Pott.

His fa­mi­ly moved to Ger­ma­ny when he was two years old, and re­turned to Am­eri­ca when he was five.

He at­tende­d Saint Fran­cis Se­mi­na­ry, Mil­wau­kee, Wis­con­sin.

After or­di­na­tion in 1884, he served va­ri­ous par­ish­es in St. Lou­is. In 1887, he be­came pas­tor of St. Mi­chael’s Par­ish, Fred­er­ick­town, Mis­sou­ri, and in 1907, pas­tor of the Holy Ghost Church in St. Lou­is, where he stayed the rest of his life.

In his last years, he served as his­to­ri­an of the Arch­dio­cese of St. Lou­is.
