Educated at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, Rowthorn spent 19 years teaching in ecumenical seminaries in America.
He then became Bishop in Charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, with his office at the American Cathedral in Paris.
In 1973, he helped establish the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University.
After 14 years as a Professor of Liturgics, he was elected Suffragen Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut.
