Sartwell is said to have been a teach­er of vo­cal and in­stru­ment­al mu­sic from Mis­sou­ri. A news­pa­per ac­count men­tions him vis­it­ing a cou­sin in Ga­le­na, Kan­sas, so per­haps he was from south­west Mis­so­uri.
