Biography

Ludolph was the son of hymn writer and Brandenburg Gymnasium teacher Levin Johann Schlicht.

A gifted student, Ludolph entered the University of Jena at a young age.

After completing his studies, in 1737 he entered the service of Count Christian Renatus von Zinzendorf as a teacher. He also held a teaching post in Herrnhut.

In 1739, he joined the Moravian Church. During this time he turned down offers to teach in his homeland.

In 1741, Schlicht went to London with bishop August Spangenberg.

Returning from London in 1742, Schlicht was called to Herrnhaag and became the main preacher of the church there. Before 1747 he returned to London as a Moravian preacher, before working in Fulda (1747–50).

Then he spent time in Bedford and Bristol.

Around 1755, Schlicht moved to Dublin, Ireland. However, adverse conditions there severely affected his health, forcing him to return to Herrnhut in 1760.

Schlicht wrote several hymns, worked as an archivist in the Herrnhut parish archives, and gave public lectures. However, he never recovered from his physical ailments.
