Biography

Maud was the daugh­ter of Frank Sew­all and niece of Will­iam Gil­christ.

She trained in vio­lin, and was self taught in or­gan and the­ory.

She ar­rived in Wash­ing­ton, DC, when her fa­ther, Frank Sew­all, became min­is­ter of the Church of the Ho­ly Ci­ty—Na­tion­al Swe­den­borg­ian Church on 16th Street. She served as the church’s di­rect­or-or­gan­ist for five de­cades (1897-1847), and is bur­ied there.

Among oth­er ac­comp­lish­ments, she help­ed found the Dis­trict of Co­lum­bia Chap­ter, Am­eri­can Guild of Or­gan­ists.
