Shaw became a chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral under George C. Martin. He was an organ scholar at Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge, studying there under Charles Stanford and Charles Wood.
He was later an inspector of music to the London schools and succeeded his brother Martin as organist at St. Mary, Primrose Hill, in 1920.
He also conducted the League of Arts Choir, and chaired the schools’ music sub-committee at the British Broadcasting Corporation.
