Biography

Daughter of a rear ad­mir­al, Shir­reff is re­mem­bered as a pro­pon­ent of high­er edu­ca­tion for wo­men.

She served on the coun­cil of Gir­ton Col­lege and the Girls’ Pub­lic Day School Com­pa­ny, helped found the Ma­ria Grey Train­ing Col­lege for teach­ers in 1872, and was pre­si­dent of the Froe­bel So­ci­ety.
