On September 10, 1835, the First Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia, appointed Shuck a missionary to China. On September 22 of that year, he sailed on the Louvre under the aegis of the Boston Board of the Triennial Convention, and went on to serve in Macao, Hong Kong, Canton (now Guangzhou), and Shanghai.
In 1854, he moved to Sacramento, California, where he worked as a missionary to the Chinese there.
In 1861, Shuck moved to Barnwell Courthouse, South Carolina, to serve as pastor of the Blackville and Steel Creek churches.
