A poet, musician, teacher, reformer, writer, Bible scholar and apologist, Simon wrote around 300 devotional songs or poems, and around 30 books.
A native Malayalam speaker, he was literate in Sanskrit and Tamil, and also mastered English, Hindustani, Telugu, Kannada, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Syriac. He was given the title Mahakavi (Dean of Poets) by the Sahitya Parishad (Academy of Literature).
He was also a prominent leader of the Brethren movement in India.
