Biography

Jacob was the son of George and Ma­ry Schmidt, and hus­band of Le­na Burk­hart (mar­ried 1901).

He at­tend­ed the Elk­hart In­st­itute; Ohio North­ern Uni­ver­si­ty, Ada, Ohio; and Tem­ple Uni­ver­si­ty.

He was or­dained a Men­non­ite preach­er in 1897, ser­ving con­gre­ga­tions in Gar­den City, Mis­sou­ri; West Li­ber­ty, Ohio; and Eli­da, Ohio.

In ad­di­tion to pas­tor­al du­ties, Smith was on the fa­cul­ty of Hess­ton Col­lege, Hess­ton, Kan­sas (1910–17 & 1927–29), and was the first pre­si­dent of East­ern Men­non­ite Col­lege near Har­ris­on­burg, Vir­gin­ia (1917–22).
