Uriah was the son of Samuel Smith and Rebeckah Spaulding, and husband of Harriet Newell Stevens.
When he was thirteen years old, his left leg was amputated above the knee due to an infection.
Late in 1852, he joined the Seventh-day Adventists. In 1853, he began to contribute to their Review and Herald, where he worked along side his older sister Annie Smith.
In 1855 he became editor of the Review, a position he held on and off until his death.
