Smucker’s song ap­peared in a 1902 Men­non­ite hym­nal pub­lished in Scott­dale, Penn­syl­van­ia.

We spe­cu­late he may be Sam­uel J. Smuck­er (1863–1942), who is bur­ied in the Oak Grove Men­non­ite Church ce­me­te­ry, Smith­ville, Ohio.
