Spring-Rice attended Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, and served in the War Office and Foreign Office, and as Earl Granville’s private secretary.
He became the British Chargé d’Affaires in Tehran, Persia (now Iran), in 1900, and British Commissioner of Public Debt in Cairo, Egypt, in 1901.
He went on to serve in St. Petersburg, Russia (1903); Persia (1906); Sweden (1908); and as ambassador to the United States (1912–18).
