Biography

Spring-Rice at­tend­ed Eton and Bal­li­ol Col­lege, Ox­ford, and served in the War Of­fice and For­eign Of­fice, and as Earl Gran­ville’s pri­vate sec­re­ta­ry.

He be­came the Brit­ish Chargé d’Af­faires in Teh­ran, Persia (now Ir­an), in 1900, and Brit­ish Com­mis­sion­er of Pub­lic Debt in Cai­ro, Egypt, in 1901.

He went on to serve in St. Pe­ters­burg, Rus­sia (1903); Per­sia (1906); Swe­den (1908); and as am­bas­sa­dor to the Unit­ed States (1912–18).
