William was the son of minister R. J. Statham.
He was educated at Marlborough and University College, Durham (BA 1856, DMus 1876).
Ordained in 1858, he served as curate of Tunstall and vicar of Ellesmere Port (1866–98).
From 1869–79, he was the Organizing Choirmaster of Frodsham Deaneries Choral Association.
Statham composed an oratorio, church services, and songs.
