Stenholm started out as a bookbinder, but later became a minister, serving in Norrköping, Malmköping, and Göteborg.
In 1874, he became editor of Lilla Sändebudet for the Swedish Methodist church.
After a stint as pastor in Galva, Illinois (1876–77), he returned to Sweden, and worked in Karlskrona, Uppsala, and Gälve.
