Biography

Stewart moved to Ala­ba­ma with his par­ents at age 10, and to Texas at age 16.

Being the son of a large fa­mi­ly of lit­tle means, he had lit­tle edu­ca­tion ex­cept the pub­lic schools. His prin­ci­pal mu­sic teach­ers were T. W. Den­ning­ton, An­tho­ny Sho­wal­ter, Ru­fus Cor­ne­li­us, and John Pat­ton.

He taught ma­ny suc­cess­ful sing­ing schools, and of 1904, lived in Mid­lo­thi­an, Tex­as.
