Stewart moved to Alabama with his parents at age 10, and to Texas at age 16.
Being the son of a large family of little means, he had little education except the public schools. His principal music teachers were T. W. Dennington, Anthony Showalter, Rufus Cornelius, and John Patton.
He taught many successful singing schools, and of 1904, lived in Midlothian, Texas.
