Martha was the daugh­ter of Cap­tain Hen­ry Brue­star, and first wife of Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter Will­iam Crooks Stock­ton of Ocean Ci­ty, New Jer­sey (ma­rried May 11, 1842, Bal­ti­more, Ma­ry­land).
