Son of a fisherman and farmer, Støylen studied at Volda, Kvinnherad, and Christiania (Oslo).
In 1890, he became a seamen’s pastor in Cardiff, and later became leader of a new Christian college at Notodden. From 1902, he was a clergymen’s teacher
in Oslo, and later Bishop of Agder (1913–31).
