Studwell was the son of Alfred Theodore and Alice B. Studwell, and husband of Ann Marie Stroia.
He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Connecticut, and a master’s in library science from the Catholic University of America.
An academic librarian by profession, he was a prolific author, producing about 400 articles and dozens of books.
He was known for his expertise on U. S. Library of Congress subject headings, Christmas carols, and college fight songs.
He retired in 2001 from Northern Illinois University, where he was the Principal Cataloguer at Founders Memorial Library.
From 1986–2010, he produced an annual study on a Carol of the Year.
