Hjalmar was the son of Aaron and Louisa Sundquist, and husband of Carol Sundquist.
Emigrating to America at age 20, he attended Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, and the Chicago Theological Seminary.
He served pastorates at the Covenant Church in Galesburg (1891–97), and First Covenant Church, St. Paul, Minnesota, until 1905.
He edited the Swedish newspaper Veckobladet for five years, then moved to Washington state after developing health problems.
He raised apples there, and taught Sunday School at the First Presbyterian Church in Yakima.
