Biography

Hez was the son of Ed­mund Bow­ers Swem, and hus­band of Min­nie Lee Swem.

Ordained in March 1881 in Law­rence­burg, In­di­ana, he had his first pas­tor­ate there.

He moved to Greens­burg, In­di­ana, around 1884 to be­come pas­tor of the Se­cond Bap­tist Church, a post he held ov­er 25 years.

He lat­er served as pas­tor in Wash­ing­ton, DC, at the Cen­ten­ni­al Bap­tist Church and the Se­cond Bap­tist Church, leav­ing in 1910 for a pas­tor­ate in Do­tham, Ala­ba­ma.

Swem was a well known lec­tur­er on the Chau­tau­qua cir­cuit.
