Biography

Uriah was the son of John Swen­gel and Sa­rah Frantz. He marr­ied twice, to Ma­ry B. Hip­ple, and Bert­ha Lu­el­la (Lu­la) Buck (York, Penn­syl­van­ia, 1898).

During the Am­er­ican ci­vil war, he was a pri­vate in Com­pa­ny I, 184th Penn­syl­van­ia In­fan­try.

In 1869, he was li­censed to preach in the Ev­an­ge­li­cal As­so­cia­tion and lat­er served as a bi­shop (1910–18).

He was an as­sist­ant ed­it­or of Sun­day School Li­te­ra­ture (1884–87); ed­it­or in the Unit­ed Evan­ge­li­cal Church (1894–98); and ed­it­or of The Keys­tone League of Chris­tian En­dea­vor Jour­nal.

He served as sec­re­ta­ry of the Sun­day School and Key­stone League of Chris­tian En­dea­vor Man­ag­ing Board (1891–1902), and as a trust­ee in the In­ter­na­tion­al Chris­tian En­dea­vor Un­ion.

He is re­mem­bered as a pi­on­eer in lead­er­ship train­ing, and in the Bro­ther­hood move­ment.
