Biography

Sydenham be­gan his mu­sic­al ca­reer as a choir boy at Strat­ford-up­on-Av­on. and went on to stu­dy at the con­ser­va­to­ry in Leip­zig, Ger­ma­ny.

He sub­se­quent­ly held ap­point­ments in Dork­ing, Sur­rey; Farn­ham, Sur­rey; Bu­ry St. Ed­munds, Suf­folk; and else­where.

He com­posed a num­ber of an­thems, and the po­pu­lar part-song The Maid­en of the Fleur-de-Lys, which ap­peared in an ear­ly is­sue of The Mu­sic­al Times.

At the time of his death, he was the or­gan­ist and choir di­rect­or at All Saints’ Church, Scar­borough.
