Sydenham began his musical career as a choir boy at Stratford-upon-Avon. and went on to study at the conservatory in Leipzig, Germany.
He subsequently held appointments in Dorking, Surrey; Farnham, Surrey; Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk; and elsewhere.
He composed a number of anthems, and the popular part-song The Maiden of the Fleur-de-Lys, which appeared in an early issue of The Musical Times.
At the time of his death, he was the organist and choir director at All Saints’ Church, Scarborough.
