Biography

Henrietta was the daugh­ter of An­ton Ten Harm­sel and Ma­ria Ten Brink.

She was edu­cat­ed at Cal­vin Col­lege, Grand Rapids, Mi­chi­gan, and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mi­chi­gan, Ann Ar­bor.

She taught Eng­lish at West­ern Chris­tian High School, Hull, Io­wa (1949–57), and in the Eng­lish De­part­ment at Cal­vin Col­lege (1960–85), where she was the first wo­man to chair the de­part­ment.

She re­ceived a Ful­bright Scho­lar­ship in 1982. The Prince Bern­hard Foun­da­tion of the Ne­ther­lands award­ed her the Mar­tin­us Nij­hoff trans­la­tion award in 1984. And in 1998, she re­ceived Cal­vin Col­lege’s Faith and Learn­ing Award.
