Henrietta was the daughter of Anton Ten Harmsel and Maria Ten Brink.
She was educated at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
She taught English at Western Christian High School, Hull, Iowa (1949–57), and in the English Department at Calvin College (1960–85), where she was the first woman to chair the department.
She received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982. The Prince Bernhard Foundation of the Netherlands awarded her the Martinus Nijhoff translation award in 1984. And in 1998, she received Calvin College’s Faith and Learning Award.
