Thom was educated at Montrose Academy, the University of Edinburgh, and the English Presbyterian College in London.
Ordained at Christ Church, Exeter (1861), he served in Worcester (1864); St. David’s, Glasgow (1869); and at the Free High Church, Kilmarnock (1876).
He retired in September 1900, and as of 1916 lived on Victoria Drive in Troon, Scotland.
