Thorne was a chorister at St. George’s, Windsor, under George Elvey.
At age 12, he became assistant organist at Henley-on-Thames Parish Church, and assistant organist at Chichester Cathedral in 1863.
He later played the organ at St. Patrick, Brighton; St. Peter, Onslow Gardens, South Kensington; St. Michael, Cornhill; St. Anne, Soho; and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, until 1882.
The Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a MusD degree on him in 1913.
