John was the husband of Harriet Sylvester and Alice Cushing.
He studied piano and music theory at the Leipzig Conservatory (1847-48). Later, he was an organist and choral conductor in Bangor, Maine, then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and taught at Benjamin F. Baker’s Boston Music School (1860–75).
